GIVING BACK THE VOICE TO DISTRICT 45
As a child, I remember coming to Lancaster during summers and visiting with cousins, aunts, uncles, and my grandfather, the late "Jackie Boy Barnes", who were all born and raised right here in Lancaster, South Carolina. I knew that one day Lancaster would be my home. My dream became my reality when I relocated to Lancaster 12 years ago, with my then 5 years-old son after his father and I decided to divorce. This is when I knew it was time to come home, to Lancaster.
After relocating, I opened a mental health agency, The Right Direction, LLC, in Lancaster, where I still work as a psychotherapist. However, I found the need to take on other roles in the community due to a lack of resources. The Right Direction, LLC became my ministry. I became a social worker, case worker, an advocate, and any other role to help those who felt helpless. I also offered free after-school care for children receiving behavioral health services, free mental health services to parents who couldn’t afford their own treatment, and a free summer program. This was all done without grant money, government assistance, or financial support from any organizations. I used profits to hire staff to support and care for the children receiving services. This was also done while experiencing my own financial hardship but refusing to limit the services provided because I knew God would get me through it. I knew then, advocacy was my purpose!
During this time, I advocated for families experiencing challenges in Lancaster, Heath Springs, and Kershaw. Many of these challenges involved The Department of Social Services (DSS), The Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), and law enforcement. I’ve even advocated for grandparents fighting for custody of their grandchildren or simply the right to visit them and for fathers who had no rights. This is how I gave back to our children, their families, and our community. I have done exactly what God has guided me to do by giving of my time, my heart, my soul, and my love to a community in need. This is how I served God and continue to serve Him.
